Due to the State’s restrictions because of the pandemic, the City is unable to proceed with its 2021 Family Festival and fireworks show. Given the extensive amount of planning and coordination this event takes, the decision follows ongoing concerns related to the City’s ability to effectively meet mandated health and safety rules established by the Oregon Health Authority at this time.
Despite many attempts to bring this year’s Family Festival to fruition, logistical challenges relating to the social distancing requirements and size gathering limits continued to pose barriers that would have made facilitating the event impossible for staff. With safety guidelines as they are today and no concrete projections as to what to expect with certainty in time for the event, the City has been unable to make plans that guarantee rules can be effectively met while still offering a meaningful experience. This situation has been extremely frustrating for the City and a source of heartbreak for those who organize this event, sponsor this event, and give of their time to make this event so unique.
While this news is understandably disappointing for many in the community, the City is actively planning for its other summer celebrations and anticipates having more clarity with respect to safety and health regulations in the coming weeks. Residents can expect to see the return of summer concerts at Happy Valley Park, including an extra two concerts added to its traditional six-week series run (see list below). The City’s popular National Night Out event is also slated to make its return in August. On top of that, the City is planning to offer a full fireworks display this Fall, pairing what would have been the crowning moment to its 4th of July signature event with its upbeat Oktoberfest festivities.
The City will continue to monitor information as it is made available and remains hopeful safety mandates will be reevaluated soon. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to stay tuned for event updates and announcements by following the City of Happy Valley Facebook page or visiting www.happyvalleyor.gov.
