LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED BY HAPPY VALLEY CITY COUNCIL
At the May 16 City Council meeting, Adriana Draskovic and Lauren Puerta were recognized for their winning submissions in the 2022-23 “If I Were Mayor” contest. Sponsored by the Oregon Mayors Association, the contest encourages youth to take a closer look at their community and describe what they would do if they could be mayor.
In the Poster Category
The winner was Adriana Draskovic, a fifth grader attending Happy Valley Elementary. If Adriana were Mayor of Happy Valley, she would find ways to bring people together with a community center focused on a variety of recreational activities. Her poster serves as a visual for how nature and community go hand in hand. Additionally, Adriana’s poster was recognized at the state level, wherein 26 cities, including Happy Valley, participated. Her entry took second place and the Oregon Mayors Association awarded her with an additional monetary prize for her achievement.
In the Essay Category
The winner was Lauren Puerta, an eighth grader at Happy Valley Middle School. If Lauren were Mayor of Happy Valley, she would focus on strengthening inclusivity and encouraging more acceptance amongst community members through meaningful services and programs geared toward students.
Mrs. Wiebke’s 5th grade class from Scouters Mountain won enjoyed a visit from Mayor Ellis and treats from Kona Ice of North Clackamas & Rose City to celebrate having 100% participation in the contest!
