Meals on Wheels People
What is Meals on Wheels People?
There are many circumstances that can make shopping, preparing, and purchasing food difficult for older adults. As the City’s Meals on Wheels People provider, Happy Valley Parks and Recreation is proud to offer relief to struggling seniors by delivering reliable, nutritious meals on a weekly basis to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents. Supporting these efforts are local volunteers who help deliver meals to resident homes and offer friendly visits to those who may otherwise feel isolated or have difficulty getting out and about.
Who qualifies for the program and how are meals funded?
The Happy Valley Meals on Wheels People program serves residents over the age of 60 who are homebound and unable to prepare their own meals due to physical or cognitive challenges. The cost of each meal is $9.05 and participants are asked to contribute to the cost to the extent they are able. This program is funded through Happy Valley’s Parks Levy dollars along with donations which help supplement costs. Those interested in utilizing the program must complete an application and meet eligibility criteria. *Given the circumstances involved, applications are often completed on behalf of the person in need of meals.
What kinds of meals do seniors receive?
Meal deliveries occur once per week, with up to seven meals provided to a participant in each offering. Meals are designed to provide at least one-third of the daily nutrients required for older adults. Each meal includes salad, entrée, starch, vegetable, bread, dessert, and milk. Vegetarian meals are also available. Recognizing those with special dietary needs, there are options for diabetic, soft, low cholesterol or low sodium meals as well.
How can I volunteer?
Those interested in volunteering must complete a volunteer application, attend an orientation and training, and successfully complete a background check through the Meals on Wheels People program. Please click here for more information. In Happy Valley, meals are delivered Tuesdays at 11am.
Donate
Please consider donating to the Happy Valley’s local Meals on Wheels People program by submitting a tax-deductible donation in the amount of your choice. Your gift helps Parks and Recreation maximize its reach and will support homebound seniors, right here in Happy Valley, who would otherwise not have consistent access to wholesome, nutritious meals.
Pints With Purpose
Raise money while connecting with friends and family over beers from participating partners from November 14th to November 24th. For every pint sold, partners will donate $1 to the Happy Valley Meals on Wheels program.
