Veterans Memorial – Phase II

Artwork set to augment Happy Valley Veterans Memorial

In 2021, a Veterans Memorial was dedicated adjacent to Happy Valley City Hall. Construction on the Memorial was limited in scope at the time due to funding availability but plans for a second installment were reserved to incorporate additional artistic elements at a future date. In 2023, the City received a grant from the State to continue enhancing the Memorial which means some exciting additions will soon be integrated. With these funds, the City is preparing to install a sculpture and improve the existing retaining walls. There are also plans to construct a new pathway to better connect the Memorial space to the pedestrian sidewalk network. This pathway will help ensure anyone can access the Memorial with ease.

Approximately 50 artwork proposals were considered for this feature, with a sculpture from Oregon City artist, Travis Pond, commissioned for placement in the Memorial. As proposed, the sculpture will depict an eagle in flight, representing the pride, bravery and courage needed to be a soldier and serve our country. The eagle will be comprised of repurposed steel from the community, military surplus items, and other metals. While the individual pieces will remain recognizable (dog tags, repurposed steel, etc.), pieces will be welded together to form a larger-than-life composition that depicts and cohesive whole. The sculpture will be mounted on a six-sided base, representing the different military branches.

The Memorial improvements are anticipated to be completed in January 2024. Once finalized, the City will officially commemorate the space.

Artist Travis Pond sits next to the sculpture in progress. Measuring nearly 11 feet by 11 feet, this Veterans Memorial sculpture will depict an eagle and pay homage to the commitment and sacrifices of community veterans via repurposed steel.
